About this rig
Tobi Lutke turned his Toronto house’s glassed wine cellar into a server room. Not big wine drinkers, he says, but the climate control was already there. So: the rack cellar.
The setup: a full rack of Ubiquiti gear - UniFi switches, the power distribution, amps - plus a DGX Station in the middle (confirmed in the replies when Kyle Kranen asked). Three racks total, clean cable runs, everything labeled. When someone asked what he’s actually running at home, his answer was two words: “The gradients need to descend.”
The thread became a homelab show-and-tell within hours:
Michael Dell showed up with a one-word review. Gunnar called it “Unifi maxing.” Al Goulon delivered the best line of the thread: “Chateauneuf-du-Rack. Aged in oak, full-bodied 48U. Notes of maple and fiber, with hints of packet loss. Vintage 2026, never corked.”
The practical questions came too. Ryan Wilber asked whether he prefers the Ubiquiti amps over Sonos. JohnL10 pointed out the NAS - the most important part of the rack - is the one thing not rack-mounted and secured, with replacement prices being what they are. Danial asked the obvious: “is this not loud as hell?” And FinXDad counted the fire risk: “I would put 10 smoke alarms nearby.”
Aaron from Vancouver one-upped everyone: 6-node Kubernetes cluster, 64GB per node, around 230 pods. That’s the kind of reply this rig attracts.
